In March 2017, Naval Architect Doug Peterson became the fourth SDYC member to be inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame. Following the NOOD Regatta, the Midwinters was the second event in the Etchells West Coast Spring Series. Over 3 days of raceing, the Race Committee pulled off all 11 scheduled races, using one as a throw out score. According to competitors, winds were lighter than expected, averaging about 6-10 knots throughout the weekend. The breeze was shifty and streaky at times, with noticeable current on Sunday.

The team, comprised of Chuck Sinks, Ben Mitchell, Jerelyn Biehl, Brad Rodi, Chris Snow and Chris Busch, was fast and smart, getting better at team racing as the event progressed. They beat the winning team, NHYC Fire, two out of three times and also beat every team in the event at least once. A great way for SDYC to test the waters of the Grandmasters keelboat team racing circuit!

Race organizers are out on San Diego waters for 46 weekends out of the year, meaning that thousands of sailors in Southern California participate in regattas large and small, prestigious and recreational, buoy and offshore, adult and junior. At the Southern California Yachting Association’s Midwinter Regatta on February 11 & 12, 2017, accomplished skippers sailed with their reliable crewmembers, which ranged from the current SDYC Commodore to military veterans who had only learned how to sail a few months earlier.
