This youth clinic is for sailors preparing for a summer of racing in the ILCAs including the SDOCR, Youth Champs and ILCA North Americans/ US Open - Long Beach.
Classes: ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7
COACHES:
Maru Urban was named the 2021 Sail1Design Coach of the Year and coached with the US Olympic & Paralympic Team at the Rio Olympics in 2016. Maru currently runs a very successful laser program as the Head Coach at Key Biscayne Yacht Club.
Steve Mitchell was born in England and has lived in Toronto, Canada since 2010. Steve won the Etchells World Championships in 1997 and the European Championships in 1997 & 1998. He was a member of the British Sailing Team from 2001-2007 sailing Star with Iain Percy and they won the 2002 World Championships, finished 6th at Athens 2004 Olympics, and were the European Champs in 2005. Steve’s Coaching achievements include: Coach at Beijing 2008 Olympics for RUSSIA (Yngling), Coach at London 2012 Olympics for CANADA (Star), Coach at Toronto 2015 Pan-Ams for CANADA (Laser), Coach at Rio 2016 Olympics for CANADA (Laser), and Coach at Tokyo 2020 Olympics for USA (Radial - Paige Railey).
Doug Hart is a very experienced coach who has coached ILCAs, High School teams and Snipe sailors from beginner to Olympic Development. Doug has won the Snipe Nationals and the Snipe North Americans multiple times and been on the podium in a variety of classes at the national and international level and won a silver medal in the ’84 Pan Am Games in Windsurfing. Doug is a former All-American at the US Naval Academy. He is currently the head coach for SDAYC’s laser program.
We will hire additional coaches as needed to provide appropriate instruction at a ratio of 10 sailors to at least 1 coach.
Sailors can sign up for individual days.
Clinic cost is $100/per day, with a $50 discount if sailing all 3 days.
Laser Charters: A limited number of Lasers available on a first come/first serve basis for charter through SDYC at a cost of $80/day during the clinic. All applications requesting a charter boat will be initially listed as “pending” to give organizers time to ensure sufficient charter boats. We may not be able to admit every applicant needing a charter boat and will let sailors know if they have been accepted as soon as possible after the application deadline.

Schedule: Be rigged and ready for a 10AM meeting in the morning. We’ll be off the water by 5PM each day.
There will be pizza on Saturday and Sunday during the post-sailing debriefs.
Venue: SDYC
Gear: Be prepared to be on the water sailing for 4 to 5 hours. Bring appropriate sailing gear for water temps in the low 60s and a dry bag with any extra gear and plenty of water and quick, healthy snacks to keep you going!
