Match Racing POW Semifinals

By | August 02, 2011

Thank you so much for your continued support of the SDYC Match Racing Team. Over the weekend of July 9-10, Jake Reynolds, Jake La Dow and Nevin Snow all traveled up to the San Francisco Yacht Club for the third qualifier for the POW Semifinals. We were going to be sailing a brand new fleet of J/22’s supplied by the St. Francis Yacht Club, and we would be sailing them on the infamous Berkeley Circle.

Saturday morning arrived and there was not a breath of wind in the sky, but we knew that would not be for long, and by the time we were at the racecourse it was already a steady 15 knots and building. That first day of the regatta was a bit of a shock to us boys from San Diego who sail the club’s J/22’s in La Playa, but none the less we pushed through the learning curve and found ourselves in a solid third after the first day of racing. It was our first real time match racing in heavy breeze and we knew what we had to do for the second and final day of the regatta to guarantee ourselves a spot in the semifinals.

Sunday was equally as daunting in terms of conditions but we sailed very confidently, having learned some tricks from the previous day. We went undefeated on Sunday to come in second place in the regatta, taking down some very experienced match racers and insuring ourselves a spot in the POW Semifinals in late August. We only finished .5 points behind the winner of the regatta, and we are confident that we are training harder and staying fitter than anyone else who intends to sail in the Semifinals.

Once again, thank you for all of your help Competition Syndicate Fund. We all appreciate it and cannot thank you enough. We hope to continue to make SDYC proud.

Sincerely,

Nevin, Jake and Jake
