Dare To Go The Distance - SDYC’s Bishop Rock Race

By | July 01, 2011

Looking for a blue water adventure close to home? Then save the date -- August 26-28 and join the fun on the Bishop Rock Race! The Race starts from Ship Rock, Two Harbors, Santa Catalina Island, proceeds around the West End, rounds Santa Barbara Island, followed by a run down to Bishop Rock, marked by a Coast Guard buoy. Round the buoy and reach 98 miles across to San Diego, finishing at Buoy #1.

The total distance is a 189 nautical mile day and night sprint along the offshore waters of Southern CA! The start this year is scheduled for 1:00 PM which will allow boats to provision and collect crew on the mainland and power across the Catalina Channel in time for the start. Dare to go the distance!

Bishop Rock is named for the clipper ship Stillwell S. Bishop which hit the rock in 1855 and after patching the hull sailed to San Francisco for repairs. The Rock is part of the Cortes Bank of undersea mountains, famous for big wave surfing and fishing and damaging three propellers on USS Enterprise in 1985.

The Notice of Race is online for more information as well as a story about the 2008 race told by an on the water observer.

The 2011 Bishop Rock race is brought to you by generous support from our sponsors Downwind Marine, DK Smith Insurance, KMA Architecture & Engineering, PacWest Marine, Shelter Island Boatyard.
