Andy took first with all bullets besides race 4; Jack took 2nd in his division. Point Loma HS teams came in 1st and 2nd in the high school division. Come down to the Club this weekend for the Club Championships.

Eric started sailing as a child in Annapolis, Maryland before his parents took him down the Intracostal Waterway in their Schooner to Mississippi. Eric tells us a little about the sailing activity growing up on the water, getting into the Star Fleet and how he caught the “Star Bug” in college. He talks about his relationships in college with 2018 SDYC Commodore Michael Dorgan.

He then speaks of the challenges of the Star boats, explaining how you have to balance everything just right. He continues explaining how Star boats used to sail triangles and how and why that has changed now.

Alli asks Eric why he has a gold star on his sail, leading him into a discussion on the meaning behind the different colored stars in the Star Fleet and how you achieve them all, receiving the gold star or even Olympic rings. He moves onto his experience at the Worlds in Italy along with a couple other campaigns.

Eric works at North Sails in San Diego. He talks about meeting Vince Bruhn and his current involvement in One Design sail making.

“If I had a choice and could sail nothing but Stars, I would,” he says.

Payson Infelise is Eric’s regular crew. Eric tells stories about how they met, including how they only lived blocks from each other without knowing it, and some of their experiences working together now.

Eric talks about sailing in the America’s cup and his campaign on Oracle. He explains the amount of work that goes into the America’s Cup, including maximizing time and gear, staying fit, and knowing your team.

Host Alli Bell, was named the Yachtswomen of the Year next to Eric named the Yachtsman of the Year. He finished by telling us about his day winning the award, what his favorite spot to sail was, and what he would be doing if he weren’t sailing.

Next month, Eric will be sailing in the Islands Race. He and Payson will also be going to Miami for the Masters Regatta and then will continue with the Midwinters and the Star Western Hemisphere Regatta, held here at San Diego Yacht Club. Eric hopes to sail in some larger European events this year as well.
