Point Loma is one of the most historical and sought after neighborhoods in San Diego; however, a few years ago residents realized that Point Loma was missing something crucial- its own brewery. One of these residents, Benjamin DuBois, MD, decided to take matters into his own hands and in 2015 with his friend Greg Anderson opened Bay City Brewing Company, which has since been dubbed a local neighborhood gem.
Anderson, who has owned McGregor’s Ale House in Mission Valley for over 20 years, and DuBois, a shoulder surgeon by day, decided to open up Bay City Brewing Company in Point Loma as a way to flex their creative muscles. After a year of planning, they officially opened the brewery and tasting room on Hancock Street in August 2015 which now features anywhere from 12-15 beers on tap.
“I’m a neighborhood guy who has lived in Point Loma for 12 years,” explained DuBois. “I was introduced to Greg and we both needed something creative to do outside of our work and family lives. Our original goal was to create THE brewery of Point Loma that all different types of people can enjoy.”
Bay City Brewing Company is different from other breweries in San Diego because of their product and location. Visible from the 8 freeway, nestled between San Diego Bay and Mission Bay with closeness to downtown; its prime location is how Anderson and DuBois landed on the name “Bay City”.
Their collection of diverse and drinkable beers is another quality of Bay City that sets them apart from their competitors. Their most popular beer, San Diego Pale Ale, has its own following and they produce one of San Diego’s only craft lagers, the Vienna Lager.
In the upcoming year, Bay City is focusing on several major projects. They have just secured the space next door to their current tasting room, and Anderson and DuBois are planning to expand into this 2,000 square foot space, using it as a center to start canning and bottling their beer. Also in the works for 2017 is opening another tasting room in San Diego. Additionally, the pair plan to spend the upcoming year increasing their production capacity, aiming to nearly double their productivity before 2018. Finally, Bay City has just received their live entertainment license which allows them to showcase live music and special guest entertainment. This is a unique feature and capability that most local breweries do not have.
We are excited to announce that Bay City Brewing Company has joined us as the official brewery partner for San Diego Yacht Club in 2017. Members can find them at various events throughout the year including the Club Champs, Yachting Cup, Etchells North American Championship and the Hot Rum Series, plus at additional dining events. Members will continue to enjoy their beer on tap at the SDYC bar as well. We feel that the partnership between these two Point Loma gems, San Diego Yacht Club and Bay City Brewing Company, is inevitable as it brings together two cornerstones of the community.
“We believe that our proximity and similarities to SDYC and our ability to collaborate make us an ideal partner,” expressed DuBois.
SDYC is thrilled to welcome Bay City as a club partner and connect two similar cultures comprised of great people and a welcoming spirit.
