November 2002 Mainsheet PC News

By | November 01, 2002

I feel somewhat guilty about writing this article, as we have been gone for the last several weeks. While our trip to France was (as always) fatting and great, we missed Sailfest, the One Designs and other events that our fleet and club offered. As the saying goes, “Ya can’t have it all…”

First, I again want to acknowledge and thank SDYC member Clark Lindberg for not only shooting such great photos of the PC Nationals, but for making them available to the fleet via CD digital photos. Clark, you rate a star in our books and are welcome to sail with us any time you want to!

This years “SAILFEST” was the same success as in past years. I hear you all had some howling breeze. Thanks to the PC’s that participated. Please know that you all brought some happiness to families that not only needed it, but also deserved it. Special thanks, to our Troy Sears and the SDYC for making this event possible every year.

The One Designs, in September, saw 7 PC’s at the line and they experienced the usual good time. #44 did well, as did #21. The winds were 9-12 K and we had two races windward/leeward with the last race to the dock. A fine day, I am told! Hull # 44 (the new kid on the block) was hauled to do some cosmetics and patching before the new owners take possession. It will be great to see new faces in the fleet and in the mix. I will confess as to whom these lucky people are in next months article!

I recently received notice from a fellow up north (Seattle) that his boat #68 ORION is up for sale. As I remember, she was splashed in 1948. ORION is in fair shape and sailed often. Those interested should feel free to contact me. He will take $4,000.00 if you pick her up. I believe that the owner is serious about wanting to sell the boat. It continues to be refreshing to know that these wonderful racing/day sailing yachts are still revered and in demand. I have, many times over, heard people say… “Nothing sails like a PC”!

Next week, Steve Barber (of the www.kettenburgboats.com website) will join Cissy and I for dinner. He will be in town for business reasons and was kind enough to ask for a casual meeting. While his passion is K-38’s and he does, in fact, own two… he has been personally responsible for saving a number of K boats, (which I know can lead to disharmony in the home!!!). I will bring Steve up to date as to what is happening with our fleet and, hopefully, we will see some press on the news site!

In closing, I will remind everyone that we have a very special fleet comprised of vintage boats. I hope all club members will feel free to ask for a “PC sail” in order to remember why we all love these yachts. What with the epoxy/fiberglass rope restoration techniques, the old saying of, “If you ain’t bailen’, you ain’t sailen”…might be replaced with “Sit down, shut up, hold on!” In any case we, in the fleet, hope you will join us some day. We have a lot to brag about.

Until next month…
