March 2002 Mainsheet PC News

By | March 01, 2002

The amount of activity on PC Row continues to amaze me! I have continued to make visits to the old Kettenburg yard to see the progress on #70. The interior is just beautiful, and the contrast of the new ribs against the white interior hull paint is terrific. I see that #45, SWAN is in there for a “shave and
haircut”, too. #9, JADE, will be in there next week for the same reason.

Many of you also know that Dick Stratton (#18) picked up a new partner (Bennett Greenwald, MBYC). Dick also recently had an opportunity to make some new friends. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the new friends were from Sea Tow and Vessel Assist! Seems that on Jan. 27th (Dick’s Birthday, I might add) he took Bennett out for a “practice sail”. Everything was going great... until they sailed over by North Island by the old degaussing pole (I can hear many of you groaning. Ooooooooohhhhhhh…). Yes, unfortunately they hit that pile of rocks that we have ALL sailed by hundreds of times. Some of us (Ya….me…) have even hit said rocks..requiring a tow off. Anyway... that was a heck of a birthday present. He first tried to get some help from Sea Tow and was
less than pleased as to what they had to offer. The next visit was from Vessel Assist. Despite the fact that Vessel Assist saved the day (boat) by helping out and getting them to the old Kettenburg yard, Dick is having to work out the details of paying the bills. The cost of the tow is nothing compared to what the repairs will cost. The rudder blade is cut in half, there is a hole on the stbd side near the waterline, about the size of a large grapefruit, multiple scrapes and gouges in the planking and the keel took a beating too. It looks pretty ugly, but it can and will all be fixed. Cheer up, Dick, all it takes is
money….. and, bye the way, thanks for sharing your story with us!

SDYC member Skip Hanson and brother, Bob, are now both members of the PC Fleet! They bought #36, which has been at Koehler’s undergoing full restoration. She is ¾ finished, with new ribs, hull, interior pieces, chain plates, deck, interior, etc. As soon as CF finished the cabin work and puts the roof back on, she will be ready for hardware. This yacht will be among the many fully restored vessels on PC Row. I, for one, am very excited about this, as you will remember that I found her sitting in a shed up in Ventura and bought her with the hopes that someone would save her. Another beautifully restored PC in our group. Welcome aboard, Skip and Bob!

#14 has her first coat of varnish on the trim! I was at Koehler’s today just in time to see the mast going in. The boat looks beautiful and I am hoping to see her in the water soon. I believe there is a strong possibility that she will be at the club as you read this!! It has been a long and hard road for owners Dave, George and Rod. I can’t wait to see the smiles on their faces when they finally get to sail the ole’ girl again!

Our fleet is going to be UNBELIEVEABLY BEAUTIFUL!

Capt. Dave Grundies has started out the year with a great sailing schedule. His first fleet newsletter came with our 2002 PC Fleet Schedule. Anyone who did not get one and is interested, please contact one of the fleet officers. Remember that March 3rd, Sunday, is a fun race to the Coronado YC. Please try to join us. This is always a fun/lazy sail and the ‘burgers at the CYC are pretty good too!

April will bring us a One Design race on the 7th and, of course, our club’s Opening Day on April 20th. We want to see ALL the PC’s uncovered and, hopefully, dressed ship for Opening Day. As you know, this is a special fun filled occasion. Club members and employees do all they can to make the weekend special, so join in the fun!

To all you “PC wannabe’s” out there, remember that I have located a few pre and post war boats that are for sale. Over time, there is little doubt that some of them will make their way down to San Diego. If you want one to have your name on the registration….you know who to call.

Lastly, most of you know that the WINGS restoration has begun. Please look for a small briefing in this month’s Mainsheet.

Until April, I wish you all the best. We might even “Splice the Main Brace” at the club Fo’c’s’le!
