Hot Rum Series Registration Notice of Race Event Info

San Diego Yacht Club invites you to join us for the 2018 Hot Rum Series, fun and family-friendly races with tradition dating back over 60 years. The Hot Rum races are open to all types of sailors from expert to novice racers, in a wide variety of boats from cruisers to sleds that are a minimum of 20 feet long with a PHRF rating under 229. See the Notice of Race for details and register online.

About 150 boats in six different classes will sail on the 12 mile course that starts and finishes in the beautiful San Diego Bay near Shelter Island. Each race uses a pursuit start with the slowest rated boat starting at noon, followed by the rest of the fleet at pre-assigned intervals. The Series will begin with Race One on Saturday, November 3, continue with Race Two on Saturday, November 17 and conclude with Race Three on Saturday, December 1. Register once and you are eligible to race in all three Saturday races throughout the fall.

SDYC Race Committee Chair Alli Bell explains why the San Diego community looks forward to the Hot Rum Series. “First, the fact that you’re sailing in November and December in beautiful weather while most of the country is experiencing winter… there’s a lot of excitement that comes with that. Everyone gets a forecast they like at least one of the days. Depending on the fleet, it may have been a long time since some of the participants have sailed and there’s such a tradition around the event. And of course you can’t forget the parties.”

A regatta full of tradition, participants, friends and family can enjoy some of Mt. Gay Rum’s Hot Rum drinks and great SDYC parties after the races. Awards will be given after the final race on December 1 at SDYC’s awards party featuring food, drinks and live music from Band Overboard. Each race will be scored by Class and Overall using handicap ratings based on PHRF. Scores are totaled over the three races to determine the Hot Rum Series Class and Overall winners.

Spectators can watch the start and finishes of the races from Shelter Island.
