January 2002 Mainsheet PC News

First let me wish you all a very happy and healthy 2002!! I trust that you all have a wonderful holiday in December and that you have all recovered from the fact that yet another year has whizzed by us.

Like many of you, I’m sure, I have been suffering through another darn flu. Seems like no matter where I go, people are blowing and sneezing. The few sunny warm days that have been squeezed in between rain storms and cold fronts have been welcomed and I look forward to getting back out on the water soon.

The PC fleet was well represented during both the Hot Rum, Termite Regatta and the Half Pint ‘O Rum this year! 5-6 boats made it out to impress the locals. I look forward to this coming sailing season when the boats now on the hard will be finished and again join in the fray. Those of you who have visited the Koehler yard recently, have seen that #37, SPOT, has a new paint job. After several years out of the water and a new epoxy job, she is ready for new hardware and can go in the water. The owner is trying to muster the time needed to finish the job.

Last I heard, the owners of #14 agreed on trim and hardware placement. A machinist is finishing up some custom pieces and assembly of the pieces continues. Like everyone else, I wait and wait and wait for any sign of progress and look forward to seeing “The Cockroach” back at the club. #78 is back in the water over at SouthwesternYC and has been spotted out and about.

Lee Estep fooled…I mean generously agreed to take on a partner for #66. Welcome aboard to new fleet members Bill and Katherine Foxley!

After the 1st of the year, Steve Barber (of the www.kettenburgboats.com) will be down to do a video tape interview of SC Paul Kettenburg. Steve hopes, some day, to have a recorded history of “The Kettenburgs” for owners everywhere to enjoy. Tom Kettenburg has been very helpful to help arrange the visit, which will include a trip to the club to see and talk about several of the different K boats. I will be present at these meetings and know that the end product will be a prized addition to the Kettenburg web site.

I continue to do what I can to locate “lost” PC’s. More importantly, I am still doing what I can to bring more boats down to the San Diego area. What with the SD Port district shrinking space available to boat yards and/or raising the leases to the point of insanity, I find it more and more difficult to locate
storage space for these boats. I am working of a couple of locations in East County where I can keep them until new buyers can be located and restoration can begin. As I have mentioned before, I have located 7 boats which are available.

During all the rain within the past month, I have had to make repeated trips down to the club to check the bilge. About 3 weeks ago, I noticed that “someone” had left a sail bag in PUFF’s cabin and though surprised, assumed that one of you, or another friend, needed to store a sail, assumed I would not mind, and was going to call me. After weeks and repeated trips to check the bilge, I became more and more confused as to how someone would have left a sail on MY boat and would not even care to let me know. I even went so far as to call or email a few friends to ask them if it was theirs. I considered putting a note on the dock next to PUFF to ask who might own the sail. After another few visits to check my boat, I decided to look in the bag to see if I could find a clue as to what kind of sail it was and who owned it. I felt bad taking a peek at something that belonged to someone else, but didn’t know what else to do. It was then that I saw the tag with my name on it and realized that Santa didn’t find out about ALL the naughty things I did last year, and he left me a BRAND NEW MAINSHEET! Wait until I tell Cissy, I’ll bet she doesn’t even know. Or does she?

Our best to you all in the new year!
