SDYC Commodore Michael Dorgan took the reins hosting this special episode with Tyler Sinks, the most recent skipper to win the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup. Tyler also recently skippered SDYC's winning team for New York Yacht Club’s Resolute Cup.

Tyler started sailing at a mere six years old and tells us about some of his first experiences with some bumps in the road as a junior sailor. He goes on to talk about the potential he saw in himself as he got older with sailing and notes the importance of friendship in the sport through his whole life. Tyler also thanked his parents for their support growing up sailing.

The principle that he used in sailing at a young age was to “practice when others are playing.” He goes on to tell the story of his first big success, winning Sabot Nationals at age 13.

From there, Tyler reflects on some of his time at Boston College and the people there that helped shape his sailing career going forward.

A few months ago, Tyler and his team won the NYYC Resolute Cup, a qualifier for the Rolex Invitational. Tyler goes into stories about participating in the Resolute Cup, including the fact that they weren’t even planning on racing, let alone winning.

Commodore Dorgan begins the conversation on the Lipton Cup where he talks about some of the history of the Cup, why it’s so important to the San Diego Yacht Club and how proud he is to be Commodore at this time. Tyler and Commodore agree that it always comes down to the last race of the regatta.

Tyler tells some stories of the Lipton Cup’s traditional banquet on Saturday night, the after winning party in the Commodore’s Cupola and finishes with how he felt going into the final moment: the last leg of the last race.
