August 2005 Mainsheet PC News

The club has already begun filling up for the annual Independence Day weekend. It is nice to see the parking lot full and so many people getting ready for a festive weekend. The weather has turned, and “June Gloom” us behind us, so the weather forecast promises a great holiday!

The 15th Annual Wooden Boat Festival is behind us. We had many new vessels at the show this year and the crowd seemed to really enjoy the show. Many club members showed their boats for the first time and people really enjoyed the event. Jack Stuphen was on hand with Aloha Jean and Ron and Lynn Render were kind enough to bring over their NEW launch that Lynn built, from plans, in their home work area. What a lovely boat! Ron, you must be so proud of all the work Lynn did! Cissy and I were pleased to attend the launching event at the club and I was amazed as to how fast the boat moved! Also at the Wooden Boat Festival, Dawn was on hand to represent the PC Fleet. She seemed to be well received and I fielded many questions, once people learned who the owner was. After the show, we hauled her for a quick bottom job, thanks to the Koehler Kraft crew. Cis and I had a relaxing sail back to the club on Friday afternoon and it was terrific to sail again after spending the time getting ready for the show, being the MC and devoting some time to the haul out afterwards.

Several fleet members missed the show because of their participation in the June 19th One Designs. There were 5 boats at the line. The wind was a perfect 10-12K and the weather BEAUTIFUL. Pete Lawrence (#66) assured me that but had a good time. Again, #14, with her crack crew took the honors. #18 followed with 1, 2 and 3. #66 took third with 2, 3 and 3. Jade (#9) was on hand as usual as was Tony Wilson with #78. Civace (#78) experienced some difficulty with the outhaul and did not compete in the last race. As always, I salute all the fleet members who made it out to the course!

I am pleased to report that our Bud Caldwell is back “at work” and will be back sailing again soon! His “unscheduled vacation” came as a surprise to all of us but we are happy to know that he is back in the fray. At least his brief absence gave many of the fleet members a chance to “move up” a slot or two on the “race results” print outs! I hope Bud and MJ know just how much we missed them and look forward to seeing him on E Dock again soon!

While our PC National’s will be held this month on the 24th and 25th, I am unable to report any exciting news at the date of this writing, however readers may be sure that I will give some details in next months column. Having, again, seen PC #84 at the club, it is exciting to think that she might be participating in the 2006 PC National’s with the new “SDYC Commodore” at the helm. I hope you are already selecting a crew, Betty Sue! It’s a jungle out there when the PC fleet mixes it up! I will remind you that August 21st will bring the “Whistler Ocean Triangle” Regatta. Please put it on your calendar.

Last week, I had the privilege of assisting Captain Dave splash #72, Yankee. She looks terrific following a recent “epoxy rope” job, new paint and bright work. Dave and Diane replaced all the standing and running rigging so she is ready to rock and roll. Now you two can get rid of the two 5 gallon bailing buckets! We’re all glad to see you three back at E Street!

So, until next month, I wish you all the best that San Diego sailing has to offer and look forward to seeing you all at the club!
