April 2001 Mainsheet PC News

I know that many of you have been suffering the same ills that I have as of late; too cold, too wet, too lazy. Just about when the weatherman tells us that we can expect some sunny weather, the clouds move in and dump more fresh water in the bilge. If it weren’t for the fact that I am conscientious about keeping water out of PUFF, I would forget what she looks like.

Four PC’s were out on the bay racing on February 4th, in the One Designs and March 4th saw our group in the bay. Thanks to Fleet Captain Dick Stratton for organizing some great events. Don’t forget the One Designs scheduled for April 8th and, of course, the Opening Day Harbor Race on April 21st. Last week, I went through the trophy case to gather some information and see that the “Best Maintained PC Class” trophy is all shined up and ready for this year’s winner. With all the hard work we have put in to bring these yachts back to life, E dock should be beautiful this year!

The cold weather has been a blessing in one respect. I had plenty of time to work on my PC research and update my files. Aside from moving forward with the restoration of the PC’s in the yard, I am working on some PC “history” records. I have recently begun researching records of the names of every PC over the years. This, while being a lot of fun, has proven to be quite a challenge. It is very easy to find errors in magazine or newspaper articles. Hand kept list are of course full of spelling errors. Last week, I spend a few hours going through our Trophy case, recording names of skippers and boats. I found that even our PC trophies have an occasional misspelling. So far I have found at least one name for every one of the hulls launched. As one might expect, many of the vessels have 4 or 5 names. Interestingly enough, the trend seems to be present owners reverting back to the original boat names. At some point, I would like to make the list available to all, with the hopes that some of you will be able to add or correct the record.

Another task I’ve elected to take on is a record of all owners over the years. I know that it will be virtually impossible to accomplish this goal, but I’m sure having a good time (read “geek”) in the meantime. I have spent hours mulling over the “history book” and have been able to add a lot of new information to my files. At this point, the biggest problem I am having is sorting out “misinformation”!

I am making good progress on the logistics of restoring WINGS. Full disclosure will follow. Soon I will be sending out announcements asking those of you who sailed during the “early days” of PC’s to help me by sharing photos, plans, memories and descriptions of rigging, trim and hardware of the 1-9 hulls. SC Paul Kettenburg has been very helpful with this task, however many of the records have disappeared over the years. In the early days, the curve of the trim or exact shape of the molding was not always accurately described and recorded, thus I will be relying on old photos and your memories to help restore WINGS to her launch days. I have scheduled a meeting with Paul and Gene Trepte for March 21st and promise to have a detailed announcement before Opening Day! This is a very exciting project and I hope to have strong support from those of you who have sailed and loved these boats over the years.

I hope the weatherman is true to form, as he is forecasting cold and rain for the weekend. That should translate to mid 60’s and blue sky. I hope to see you all out there!
