There were 28 boats racing in the Coronado Roads March 31 – April 2 for the Etchells Midwinters West regatta hosted by San Diego Yacht Club. Following the NOOD Regatta, the Midwinters was the second event in the Etchells West Coast Spring Series. Over 3 days of raceing, the Race Committee pulled off all 11 scheduled races, using one as a throw out score. According to competitors, winds were lighter than expected, averaging about 6-10 knots throughout the weekend. The breeze was shifty and streaky at times, with noticeable current on Sunday.
Naval architect Doug Peterson, a key designer of two America’s Cup winners (America³ in 1992 and Team New Zealand in 1995), has been tapped for the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.
Team SDYC placed 3rd in Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Palmer Trophy Grandmasters Team Race. The team, comprised of Chuck Sinks, Ben Mitchell, Jerelyn Biehl, Brad Rodi, Chris Snow and Chris Busch, was fast and smart, getting better at team racing as the event progressed. They beat the winning team, NHYC Fire, two out of three times and also beat every team in the event at least once. A great way for SDYC to test the waters of the Grandmasters keelboat team racing circuit!
The Herreshoff Marine Museum / America's Cup Hall of Fame announces the 2017 inductees to the America's Cup Hall of Fame: John K. Marshall, Doug Peterson, and Syd Fischer. The America’s Cup Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on October 5, 2017 in San Diego, California, aboard the U.S.S. Midway.
San Diego Yacht Club will host the Yachting Cup on May 5-7, 2017, ushering in the first regatta for the brand new Pac52 Class. The Class features two SDYC boats, Victor Wild's Fox and Tom Holthus Bad Pak, who will compete against Manouch Moshayedi's Rio and Frank Slootman's Invisible Hand.
