Hot Rum Series II

NOTES FROM HOT RUM RACE 1:

Hot Rum I, (November 8, 2104) was a busy day for everyone on the Hot Rum course! It is worth noting/reinforcing the following important details:

  1. An amendment to the Sailing Instructions has been posted modifying SI 14 (Time Limits) so that a DNF is scored consistent with SI 17 (Scoring).
  2. There is a STRONG (-7’ tide) outgoing current for all three Hot Rum Starts. During the next two Hot Rums, if you are doing low speed maneuvers just in front of Corinthian, or outside the start line and plan to "swoop" in across her bow and start right at the Signal boat - the current will sweep you onto Corinthian’s anchor chain, and pin you under the anchor pulpit, and there will be damage to your boat.  Four boats did this during Race 1 today. Please make other strategic plans!
  3. IF you choose the start method described above, and do find yourself on the verge of a collision, (or a collision with ANY other boat) – DO NOT LET YOUR CREW ATTEMPT TO FEND OFF. Keep them away from the impact. It is not worth the very high risk of an injury to your crew. Fiberglass is much cheaper to repair.
  4. Hot Rum Hats are available at the Front Desk (two per boat) while supplies last. Any remaining hats will be thrown to the crowd at the conclusion of awards after the final Hot Rum.
  5. Sail safe! Sail for fun!
  6. This is a reminder to be aware of Sailing Instruction 12.1 which reads "RRS 30.1 (I-Flag/Round-The-Ends) will apply to all starts."

What this means is that if you are over the start line at any point within one minute of your start time, in order to ‘restart’ and avoid being scored “OCS”, your whole boat must return to the “pre-course side of the line” by going around one of the ends of the start line. (Re-read #2 if you choose to round the Signal Boat Corinthian)
This rule is so you don’t plow into the next boat(s) attempting to start 30 seconds behind you.
Further, as you will be sailing against an outgoing tide, your time to restart will be longer than you would wish.
And, you are likely to encounter significant traffic once back on the ‘pre-course’ side of the line (note to everyone – stay clear of the start area if you aren’t starting in the next minute or two. )
Please discuss your start strategy with your tactician and bow-person and ask them to be conservative in their approach and estimation of your position on the line.

Thank you for observing these reminders and tactical suggestions and hope  you have a great time on the water.

    Fairwinds,
    Race Committee
