You may already know that Dr. Ray Ashley grew up in San Diego and became the Executive Director and Curator of Ships for the San Diego Maritime Museum in 1995. Since that time, there has been a phenomenal growth in the Museum. Ray holds a BA in Anthropology from UCSD, an MA in Maritime History and Museum Studies from East Carolina University, and a PhD in History from Duke University, specializing in the history of science, technology and medicine. He teaches university courses at USD and UCSD. But you probably didn’t know that Dr. Ashley spent his senior year in high school at sea on the oceanographic research schooner Westward?
Don’t miss hearing Ray talk about some interesting stories about each of the Museum’s ships, something that you generally don’t know or haven’t thought about.
