Allow me to introduce you to Bruce Ives, a name that is synonymous with tennis talent and being an all around nice guy. Most recently, he was the SDYC men’s and mixed doubles champion of 2007. Bruce and his sister, Sharon shared their interest in tennis as youngsters. Bruce reached a competitive level at Point Loma High School reaching #3 in the city. He intended to play competitively at San Diego State University until a broken arm got in his way. It appears that Bruce is naturally athletic and really enjoys the outdoors. Besides winning almost every tournament at the SDYC his latest outdoor hobby is golfing with clients.
Professionally, Bruce’s banking career is well known in San Diego. With a start at First Interstate Bank in 1994 as a regional manager and then moving to Scripps Bank and Cuyamaca Bank, he finally settled at Coronado First Bank as the first president and CEO.
As a Point Loma native, Bruce spent many years of his youth at the SDYC. As adult members, Bruce and his wife Gail have made huge contributions to the House Committee, Entertainment Committee and Finance Committee. Away from the dock, they enjoy family time on their Beneteau, Island Time.
Bruce’s enthusiasm for sports obviously rubbed off on his children. Brittany, a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School is involved with the school’s swim program, Brandon is involved with school football and wrestling and his youngest, Ashley pursues her dancing interests.
Bruce says that his New Year’s resolution is to play more tennis. So at the next SDYC tennis tournament or out on the bay, be sure and say hi to Bruce and his family.
It gives me great pleasure to tell you more about our 2007 Woman’s Doubles winner, Jane Fetter. For those of you that know Jane, you will agree with me that she is an amazing woman. Her parents joined SDYC in the 1940’s. Early dating revolved around tennis and sailing at the SDYC. The love of her life and her current tennis partner, Tom Fetter, became interested in getting to know Jane better once he realized that she owned a bigger boat. He sailed a 14’ Penguin and she had a 17’ Lightning.
After completing her education at Bishops and then at Stanford, she became very involved in creating and chairing large fundraising events for the San Diego Zoo, the Reuben H Fleet Science Center, Birch Aquarium, San Diego Crew Classic, America’s Cup Ball and the San Diego Foundation. She has made it her career to volunteer on Boards for Stanford University, Francis Parker, SD Oceans Foundation, the RHF Space Theater and Science Center and the Catalina Island Conservancy to name a few. She also served as Tom’s very able “right hand” while he acted as the Club’s Staff Commodore in 1994.
Because SDYC and the Catalina Island Conservancy are dear to her heart, it is her hope that every SDYC member will support the 2008 Conservancy Ball on April 12th.
After 50 years of marriage, Jane and Tom are most proud of three children, Trevor, Margi and JJ and their four grandchildren including Marly and Megan.
Jane is a great role model on the court and off and recognizes that the SDYC tennis courts are a wonderful asset. She continues to play tennis five times a week, winning championships at SDYC, Cherry Cove, doubles and singles League play at Barnes and La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. So next time that you see Jane and Tom on the tennis courts or on their 47’ Bayliner, “Bubble Machine”, be sure to say hi!
