The Port Captain’s Race
Around Bishop Rock, at 221 nautical miles, is a long course
through deep blue ocean water and southerly trade winds, and
is not to be taken lightly.
The Port Captain’s Race Around
Bishop Rock is the decathlon of sailing. The challenges on
this race include, but are not limited to provisioning and
delivery (to Catalina), navigation and chart reading, light
air sailing, heavy air sailing, watch systems, night sailing,
current, and upwind and downwind sailing.
Bishop Rock is a shallow seamount
100 n.m. from shore located on the Cortes Bank and is named
for the schooner Stillwell S. Bishop, which ran into the rock
in 1855. The Bishop didn't sink there; her crew patched her
hull and sailed her safely to San Francisco; but the name
stuck. It is also located well into the southerly trade winds
that generally lurk off the southern California Coast.
The race begins at Two Harbors,
Catalina just off Ship Rock and has a home stretch to the
finish at San Diego sea buoy #1.
The start of the race is Friday,
August 15 at 1100.
Some year’s the weather is
light, and some year’s it is not. But regardless, it
is an adventure at sea.
Dare to go the distance!
