Jack Sutphen
Jack Sutphen (1920-) established himself on
the east coast, in the late '50's, as an accomplished sailmaker
with Ratsey & Lapthorn, in New York. His sailing skills were
known, and he eventually became associated with the America's
Cup races. A life long friendship (and competition!) with Dennis
Conner brought him to San Diego. Active in both the Conner "Freedom"
and "Stars and Stripes" campagins, Jack and his fellow
"Mushrooms" followed the races to Australia, Hawaii
and Fremantle. From 1958 through 2000, he was involved with a
total of 9 different America's Cup campaigns. Settling in San
Diego with his lovely wife Jean, Jack has been a constant active force at the San Diego
Yacht Club, staying involved with racing and club affairs. He
has been honored as a recipient of the SDYC's "Burgee of
Merit" award, for "Outstanding Service as a Volunteer".
In 2005, Jack was inducted into the Rolex "America's Cup
Hall of Fame", at the Saint Francis YC in San Francisco.
A driving force in the SDYC PC Fleet, Jack was
instrumental with helping the fleet grow and encouraging sailors,
young and old, to become active with this wonderful fleet. Jack
was responsible for bringing a number of PCs to San Diego and
helping the fleet grow. He has won the PC Nationals 8 times.
A friend and teacher to all, Jack Sutphen continues
to challange fellow yachtsmen and women in and around San Diego
Bay!
