Wally Springstead
Wally was the younger of the two infamous "Springstead
Brothers" who were the first proud owners of PC #5 IMP. Wally
only sailed with his older brother, Charles, a short time because
"brotherly love" and "rank" made it difficult for him to make
his "own decisions". The Springstead family had a close friendship
and relationship with the Kettenburg Yard and Wally spent a lot
of time with the yard crew over the years. After a stint at Stanford
University and spending his summers with the Marine Corps, Wally
found himself "visiting" a few islands in the Asian Pacific as
a US Marine. After the war, Wally took the helm of the family
business, rebuilt ties with his wife and daughter and then decided
to buy a PC of his own. He found himself the proud owner of #14, LA
CUCARACHA.
The determination he had picked up via his path through life
(mixed with a bit of sailing skills!!) made him PC National
Champion 5 times! If you look at the SDYC trophy case, you will
see his name repeated on every PC trophy that exists!
Wally went on to sail many other boats and
classes, but he never forgot the wonderful times sailing with
the PC Fleet and continues to be a fan and strong supporter of
these wonderful boats and the "family of sailors" that sail them.
