Area GHJL Qualifier for US Match Race Champs

By | June 12, 2014

On June 14-15, SDYC will be hosting the second of two events in the Area Group GHJL Qualifier Series, where the fastest fleet will advance further along to the ultimate goal of competing in the U.S. Match Racing Championship. As this regatta is a competition is between yacht clubs and not between specifically designated persons, each entry will be from a different club, with each of the skippers acting as the club’s representative. A maximum of eight skippers were selected for the qualifier event, where they will sail with crews of 3 or 4 in J-22s. SDYC is proud to host the competition of the best of the West, with participants travelling from as far as Honolulu to compete. Chief Umpire Karen Butler and PRO Summer Greene plan to have two round robins that will determine which of the eight skippers will ultimately advance to the next round. International umpires Dave Pyron and Anders Otto, as well as three other certified umpires will be attending to score this U.S. Sailing qualifier. The regatta will take place on the waterfront of downtown San Diego, near Grape St. and the Star of India, where anyone is welcome to watch what is bound to be an exciting event.
