SABOT RACING FLEETS Pre-requisite: Completion of Sea Horses, Sea Otters, Instructor Promotion (4 week and 8 week sessions). C3 Fleet sailing emphasizes participation rather than results. The class reviews how to sail upwind and how to get around a triangle course. The curriculum covers intermediate racing tactics, The Racing Rules of Sailing, and race course management. This class will be integrated with the Novice Racing Class. C2 Fleet sailors continue to work on boat handling skills and the Racing Rules of Sailing. Sailors will become more confident in strong wind and adverse conditions. Sabot Nationals Required. C1 Fleet sailors should be confident with boat handling and ready to practice more advanced racing techniques. Sailors will learn how to practice efficiently and use different sailing drills to improve boat speed and handling. Sabot Nationals Required. B Fleet sailing focuses on sail and boat trim. Sailors are introduced to the physics of racing sailboats. Sailors practice using sail controls, body weight and sail theory to make their boat go faster. Sabot Nationals Required. A Fleet sailors train to achieve top finishes at regattas including the Sabot National Championship. The practices can be compared to advanced racing practice with many drills and specialized coaching. Sailors will be expected to ask many questions and learn how to evaluate their own performance. Sabot Nationals Required. Sabot Racing Fleet sailors are encouraged and expected to travel to regattas along the Southern California Coast. The Sabot Racing Schedule will be published and trailers will be available to be towed to all events. Coaches will escort sailors to regattas and provide support on and off the race course. NOVICE SABOT RACING Pre-requisite: Completion of Sea Horses, Sea Otters, or instructor promotion (4 week sessions). Sailors should be able to navigate around a triangle racing course and know all points of sail. This four week class is designed to prepare sailors for the Sabot Racing Fleets. Students will be introduced to the Racing Rules of Sailing and intermediate racing techniques. Instructors will teach skills including sitting on the rail, using the tiller extension, roll tacking, equipment care, changing sail controls, and sportsmanship. Sailors will practice starting and sailing race courses. Charter: This class offers the option to charter a club boat if you will not be using your own. Class times: 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm |

SAILING 305 Pre-requisite: Completion of 6th grade, Sailing 205, or Sabot C1 fleet or higher This four week class is for teen sailors who want to improve their sailing skills with an emphasis on racing. Sailing in C420’s students will be introduced to spinnaker and trapeze techniques while exploring racing tactics and strategy. Participation in local weekend regattas will be strongly encouraged. SAILING 205 Pre-requisite: Completion of 6th grade This class is designed for pre-teen to teenage kids who have little or no sailing experience. The four week course is perfect for a new sailor who wants to sail with friends in double-handed dinghies. Curriculum covers vocabulary, points of sail, rigging, and fundamental boat handling. The goal of this class is to have fun, while developing safe boating skills. Class times: 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm |

SEA OTTERS Pre-requisite: Completion of Sea Horses or After School Sailing Classes This all-summer class is ideal for particularly enthusiastic beginners. The first four weeks run parallel to Sea Horses and focus on independent sailing skills. In the final three weeks we will begin to introduce racing concepts with the goal of moving to afternoon classes the following summer. SEA HORSES Pre-requisite: Completion of Sea Urchins or After School Sailing Classes. Sailors should have basic knowledge of wind direction and parts of a sail boat. In Sea Horses students will begin to sail “solo” in sabots, while deepening their understanding of rigging, boat handling, seamanship and safety. This is a big step, so as always, the emphasis is on fun. It is not uncommon to repeat Sea Horses over multiple summers. SEA URCHINS Pre-requisite: Completion of the 1st Grade The purpose of this course is to provide a fun-filled introduction to a lifetime of sailing. Kids will sail with two or three of their peers and an instructor in a 14 foot dinghy and learn through demonstrations and practice. The game inspired curriculum covers learning the names of boat parts, finding wind direction, learning to steer with the tiller, and fundamental seamanship skills. The class enables the kids to become familiar with water safety and dinghy sailing, and to feel comfortable around the yacht club and on the water. Class times: 8:30 am to 12:00 noon |

HIGH SCHOOL WARM-UP Pre-requisite: Completion of 7th grade and an interest in competing on a high school sailing team. Sailing is one of the fastest growing high school sports in Southern California and across the country. SDYC is helping lead the way with at least five local teams practicing at our facility, and several national championships over the years. High school sailing offers great competition as well as a fun social aspect including coed participation and travel to regattas. This course is intended for anyone hoping to geat a head start on the fall season, especially incoming freshman, beginner crews, or crews looking to make the transition to skippering.
