The First Annual SDYC Kid's Dock Fishing Contest was held the morning of July 3rd. Designed to engage 4th of July Weekend campers, the event exceeded our expectations.
33 youngsters signed up for the event which started at 7 AM. Within a few minutes the kids concentrated at the "Hot Spot" on the dock below the Forecastle. This gave lots of entertainment to the bleary eyed adults sipping their morning coffee.
And the fishing was great! The kids caught lots of fish. Many thanks go to the adults who gathered ghost shrimp for the eager anglers. Gary Stephany, Gordie and Louie Zimm, Peter Evering as well as Sam and Bryan from the Sea Call were adult mentors.
Top catches for the boys were:
Everett Wood -- 15 inch Spotted Sand Bass
Alec Johnson -- 14.5 inch Jacksmelt
Jared Bacon -- 13.5 inch Yellow Fin Croaker
The girls did well with:
Bridget McQueen -- 12.5 inch Spotted Sand Bass
Sara Parker -- 8 inch Halibut, 7.5 inch Calico Bass, 6 inch Yellowfin Croaker, 7 inch Opaleye, 8 inch Jacksmelt
The most unusual fish was a Black Croaker caught by Zane Lowery and the most fish were caught by Sean Rosier with a total of 7 fish including Opaleye, Yellowfin Croaker, Rubbermouth Perch and Calico Bass.
We would like to thank our volunteers for their help with weigh-in and releasing of the fish. They were Louie and Gordie Zimm, Peter Evering, and Bryan and Scott from the Seacall.g, and Bryan and Scott from the Seacall.
