Shea Weston is an Electrical Engineer in San Diego and will be doing the FUBAR Seminars this week for FUBAR.  He will be doing our Electrical and Electronic seminars.  Shea is extremely knowledgeable in both of these fields.  His company is “Offshore Outfitters” and telephone 619-225-5690.Shea will be doing some private seminars in San Diego in October on SSB and Sailmail.  The SSB seminar will be done with Gordon West who is a well-known expert in his field.  The Sailmail seminar will be presented with the Sailmail software company.If you are interested, please checkout their website at saildocs.com/seminars.

FUBAR Participants:

For my last race to Puerto Vallarta, Jan. 2009,  I purchased a new, very complete Marine Medical Kit “EZ 2000”.   Thankfully I never had to open it. The kit has most  of the necessities that meet the usual medical problems encountered while voyaging extended periods in open waters.

I no longer require  the kit and feel it would meet the requirements of anyone participating  in the “FUBAR  Odyssey”. John Houts has provided an article, “Tips on Cruising a Power Boat in Mexico”, that is an excellent resource for all FUBAR participants (www.sdyc.org/fubar/pdf/john_houts_tips.pdf).  In this article, he recommends returning in July (see Pages 41, 51) for a variety of reasons if you intend on staying in Mexico for an extended period.  As an added comment from John Houts, see this article about the weather south of Baja in June 2009 (www.latitude38.com/lectronic/lectronicday.lasso?date=2009-06-22&dayid=288#Story2).

Both Marina Palmira and Marina de La Paz have 24/7 uniformed security guards, but I think Marina CostaBaja has the best security in town. But, of the two alternatives you mentioned, I’d pick Marina de La Paz for leaving the boat, because it has the advantage of a friendly neighborhood watch program among the yatistas, including the Club Cruceros on the premises. And it’s within walking distance of several good restaurants, chandleries, shops, etc. 

However, for La Paz, you’ll probably want to use the La Paz International Airport (airport code LAP or MMLP). It’s near the south end of La Paz Bay, about 15 minutes from downtown La Paz by taxi. I know Alaska flies there, also Aeromexico and Horizon Air, but I don’t know who else.  If you book flights through the international airport in San Jose del Cabo (SJC), it’s a 2 hour taxi ride to La Paz – which might be longer than your flight. Rental cars are available at both airports. There are a few charter puddle jumpers connecting SJC to LAP, but you’d spend the rest of the day in transit. I think the hotel staff at Marina CostaBaja can help you book flights, if you’re staying there at least a few nights after the FUBAR.

If you’re interested in leaving your boat in a marina near the international airport for quick access, you might check out the new Singlar La Paz Marina in the south end of La Paz Bay; about 3 minutes by taxi from the international terminal. Although it’s more isolated from town, the Singlar marina has a nice pool, laundry, haul out yard and some kind of eatery on the premises, and there’s one nice hotel on the water about a block away. It’s the newest and least expensive marina in La Paz.  The Singlar marina is very popular for folks who want to park the boat somewhere economical for the summer and fly down occasionally to use the boat.
