Specific "Aspect of Yachting" - Amateur Radio License Training
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Amateur License Levels:
1. Technician Class License (T) - The First Amateur Radio License Level (beginning ham level) is primarily for "line-of-sight", 2-way, VHF/UHF radio communications.
2. General Class License (G) - The Second Amateur level is the most versatile class of ham license where you get privileges on all short and long range ham radio bands for "over-the-horizon", 2-way, HF radio communications in addition to all Technician Class privileges.
3. Extra Class License (E) - The Highest Amateur level granting privileges to all ham band frequencies.
In order to advance, you must first take the Technician exam, then the General exam and last, the Extra class exam. You do not have to advance if you are happy staying with the Technician class, but most ham radio operators, especially boaters, study and test for the more difficult General class after passing the Technician exam first. Some people take all three exams in one sitting, but the tests have to be taken in order, you cannot skip a test.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to get your Amateur Radio License:
1. Contact the FCC on-line: You must register through the FCC's COmmission REgistration System (CORES) on-line. Upon registration, you will be assigned a FCC Registration Number (FRN). This FRN number will be used to uniquely identify you in all transactions with the FCC.

SDYC Radio School III Notes:
1. The Technician Class License Material will be covered in more detail in class than the General Class License Material.
2. The General Class License Material is more complex and time consuming to cover in the allotted time available; therefore, we will only have a “fast-paced” review of General exam questions and answers in class. If you plan to take and pass the General exam, then you will have to study all General training material on your own time, before class, so that the General Q&A review will make sense.
3. I recommend that all participants take both the Technician and General exams. Cost is $15 total to take each of the three license class exams. If you do not pass an exam, it will cost you an additional $15 if you want to retake an exam that was not passed.
