SDYC’s Snipe Fleet falls under the greater Fleet 495 banner which includes all San Diego Area clubs. While many regattas are held in Mission Bay, SDYC is often tapped for the bigger events such as the 2023 PCC’s and the 2022 US Nationals. Our sailors are found at the front of the fleet in many local, regional, national and international class regattas. SDYC icons are heroes in the Snipe class as well, from Mark Reynolds winning record to Carl Eichenlaubs groundbreaking boats. The Snipe class is particularly popular for a wide swath of sailors due to its tunability which allows a diverse weight range for teams to compete on equal footing. This includes plenty of women, juniors, and recent college grads who are all drawn to the very competitive racing as well as the excellent on shore camaraderie all summed up in the class motto, “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun”. The local fleet is active and often has boats available to borrow for an event if you want to come and dip your toes in the bird bath.
